Slice of Life: #Guryon

On February 12, 2020, Mrs. Balingasa, the Grade 6 Filipino teacher, can be heard across the quadrangle as she asked her students to form a line. The students begged her to give them a few more minutes. She reminded them that it was almost lunchtime. Reluctantly, they lined up. But then one student said, “Hey, we can play again after eating.” This statement perked them up right away.

This slice of life was from the Grade 6-Milton class. They were learning Ildefonso Santos’ poem entitled, “Ang Guryon.” The activity for this session included flying the kites that they made in class.

The students took turn running and tossing the kites. Sometimes, it took several tries before the kites flew high enough. Nevertheless, the smiles on their faces remained. The heat of the sun on their skin was generally ignored as their sweat ran free.

To any adult observer, the whole scenario brings back nostalgia for those carefree childhood days.

Santos’ poem encourages its readers to chase their dreams despite the trials and hardships they might encounter. On this day, the students showed willingness to try again when their kites do not fly as high as they should. Likewise, JCA hopes that this graduating batch will pursue the dreams God planted in their hearts. By God’s grace, their dreams can become a reality.
