Humanities at Work for Societal Transformation to Shape the Post-Pandemic World by Eliza Janel Tan

To advocate various United Nations Sustainable Development Goals (UN SDGs), the Junior High School (JHS) Language, Music, and Social Science Areas held their first ever online co-curricular activity with the theme: Social Science and Language for Sustainable Societal Transformation to Shape the Post-Pandemic World by batch through Google Meet on December 15, 2020.

JHS CO-CURRICULAR ACTIVITY

The activity allowed the JHS students to work collaboratively, create, and communicate their ideas and advocate specific UN SDGs through the use of language, media, and music elements.

The UN SDGs, composed of 17 Global Goals related to each other, is a “blueprint to achieve a better and more sustainable future for all” in the year 2030.

During the culminating activity, each grade level had a program that featured the best works of each section. The Grade 7 students created mash-up songs on Good Health and Well Being (SDG 3). On the other hand, the Grade 8 students made their own songs, lyrics and melody, to promote Quality Education (SDG 4). The Grade 9 students put together their own infomercials based on Responsible Production and Consumption (SDG 12) and the Grade 10 students designed their own infographics on Decent Work and Economic Growth (SDG 8). The best works of the level were presented during the program.

Apart from the competition, Mr. Miguel Luis C. Cabais, Mr. Joshua O. Torres, and Mr. John Calvin R. Reyes, Sustainable Development Goals advocates, were present to give the students an insightful morning of discussion to enlighten students more about how the different UN SDGs can be achieved and realized through their efforts and cooperation. They highlighted the contributions that the student can make, young as they may be, in order to impact their immediate community.

Truly, this activity has ignited students’ interest and sense of responsibility to proactively participate and support the UN SDG’s as we move toward a post-pandemic world.
