JUBILEANS TOP PUBLIC SPEAKING CONTEST

Last September 24, 2014 two Jubileans, John Ethan Travis Ko Uy of 10B – Peace and Ezekiel Young of 10 – Solomon, were hailed champion and second runner-up in the 1st Asia Pacific College (APC) Speak Sense Contest, an inter-high school public speaking contest with the theme, “Educating the mind without educating the heart is no education at all.” The contest was organized by SPEAKS, the official debate and public speaking society of APC.

Over 40 contestants from schools such as Colegio de San Benildo, Colegio de Sta. Rosa, and De La Salle Zobel entered the elimination round and only eight of them reached the final round.

Each contestant was required to prepare and memorize a five-minute speech on the contest theme and to answer a few questions about his speech after his presentation. APC believes that the love for public speaking should be instilled to young learners for them to develop their communication skills.

Placing champion, Ethan had an average score of 94 while, Ezekiel ranked third with an average of 89. With the help of their coach, Ms. Mikaela Zoe Nery, and the advice of JHS Principal, Mrs. Evelyn Bumatay and the English Area faculty, the representatives were able to excel in communicating their ideas.

Ms. Nery, the champion coach, shares, ”What our education needs now is not a mere education of the mind but an education of the heart as well, for if we educate the heart, the mind is nurtured and driven to excel for the love and service of others which is a product of the heart’s education.”
